Registering on StarChat:

How to register at Starchat using one of the following software... mIRC, x-chat, Pirch, and javachat. Plus using Starchats IRC for MSNTV/webTV.

As soon as you register and activate a nick this will secure your nick to keep it for your use. You will have to identify to nickserv every time that you log onto starchat. This will keep people from grabbing your nick and allow you to see the channel list on Starchat. The logging on each time insures that your nick won't be dropped from Starchat. It tells starchat that you are the owner of that nick because you supplied the necessary password when you identified. It also allows you as a registered user at Starchat to register a channel and be auto oped in that channel by chanserv. what all of this amounts too is greater protection for your nick, and for the channel(s) that you may own, or be a operator in. Unregistered channels as well as nicks are at risk of being lost. Any user at starchat can register both your nick and your channel if you haven't registered them, if they choose to do so. It's not a nice practice, but many nicks have been lost this way. So if you value the nick you use, please do register it.

For help at anytime during registration please type: /msg nickserv help register or /join #starchat WebTV/MSNtv type: /join starchat

The instructions below are done in a non tecky way so that you will know how to do this. The page text is in black the commands for you to type are in navy. Unless it is in navy don't type it into your mIRC/x-chat, javachat, or your MSN/Webtv IRC.

MSN/Webtv IRC

The instructions below are intended for Starchat IRC made for Webtv/MSN users. To get this IRC please go here: Starchat IRC for WebTV/MSNTV
Users of mIRC, x-chat, Pirch, and javachat please scroll down the page.

While in your starchat IRC... Check that you are using the nick you want to register. Type something like "the crazy brown fox" into the channel, then see beside it what nick is displayed. Click to open nickserv go to nick setup then nick registration type in your email and a password. make sure to put your spaces in-between each of the email and the password. Choose a password that can not be guessed easily. But be sure you can remember it because you will need this to log on.
when you are done with this you will get a email from starchat. Check your junk folder for it incase it got lost. you have to activate the nick by going to nickserv activation and put in the activationcode. From this point on when you log onto starchat you will then ID In the IRC. Click on the ID button and type in the password you typed in during registration. Every time you go to starchat under this nick be sure to ID.

If you have no IRC, or you have a IRC that has no nickserv buttons etc, then please do the following: Go to starchat just as you would be typing in the channel type the following:
/msg nickserv register your-valid-email-addy your-password so lets say your email addy is crazyZfox@home.net and your password is 12dht45 so you would type into the text area
/msg nickserv register crazyZfox@home.net 12dht45 Please notice the spaces in-between each the register and email and password They all have a space. Be sure to include them. Now check your email inbox for a email from starchat. Check your junk folder incase it got lost. In this email is a validation code. Copy this code and go back to Starchat and type in:
/msg nickserv activate codehere So if starchat sends you a email that says your activation code is 123456789 you then go back to starchat after you copy this code, and you paste or type in:
/msg nickserv activate 123456789
Now when you log onto starchat type in /msg nickserv identify yourpasswordhere So if your password when you registered was 12dht45. Then you type in /msg nickserv identify 12dht45

A few Webtv users have said they worry that they will make a mistake and will accidently be posting their password to the channel. If this is your concern then start using starchats IRC for WebTV. This IRC already has nickserv, and the only mistake you can make is in the password for your nick. So use Starchats IRC and you don't have to worry about posting your confidential information in a chat room.

Now on to mirc, pirch, x-chat, and javachat registration.

All of these are able to use shortcuts when registering to starchat. They also register the same way.
/ns is the same as typing /nickserv and /cs is the same as typing /chanserv. It doesn't take long to catch onto this. But if you are new to chat, it can seem like a foreign language at first. Don't be intimidated by this. Dig in, and learn all you can. The ones that know the most have the most confidence running channels/rooms.
While on starchat check that you are using the nick you want to register. Type something like "the crazy brown fox" into the channel, then see in channel beside it what nick is displayed. If it is the right nick then type the following: /ns register yourvalidemailaddy yourpassword. Make sure to use a real email address and a password that you can remember you will need the password later.
so lets say your email addy is crazyZfox@home.net and your password is 12dht45 so you would type into the text area /ns register crazyZfox@home.net 12dht45 Now check your email for a email from starchat. In this email is a activation code. Copy the code, and at starchat type the following: /ns activate codehere So if the code is 123456789, then you will type /ns activate 123456789 When you log onto starchat after activation you will type in /ns id passwordhere. This will look like /ns id 12dht45 Please notice the spaces, if you ever have a problem then type /ns help or type /join #starchat be sure for now on when you come to starchat to ID to nickserv. this will keep your nick active, and you will not loose it.
The slight difference to the ID is the javachat. javachat users can type in their password right below their nick when they log onto the javachat. But if you forget you can still do the /ns id passwordhere in channel.

As for the safety of you password. javachat is better off typing in their password when they log on. Mirc, X-chat, etc are better off typing their ID in the status window, instead of in channel. At least if you make a mistake on the status window you wont be broadcasting your password for all to see.

Thanks for flying Starchat!
