Making Strong Passwords:

Requirement

Length = 8 to 16 characters (8 characters for general mail etc. For business 16 characters or more.) Bank accounts and shopping accounts are treated the same as a business account. This also applies to any website you use a credit card at All of these are 16 characters or more if they have your sensitive information.

Complexity

Mix of alpha, numeric and non-alphanumeric (e.g., !,#,@) (m9T3*7h@)

Format

Mix of upper and lower cases

Password age

Passwords must be changed every 30 days for host servers, every 60 days for web mail, every 30 days for businesses. general public every 60 days bank accounts are treated as a business, same with places you do business. (shopping etc.)

System usage

Passwords must be different for all systems or applications. Never use the same password for several accounts.

Password history

Passwords can not be re-used for a period of two years for business, six months for non business. please treat your passwords that are protecting sensitive information as a business password.

Common usage

Passwords cannot be found in either Webster’s Dictionary, a calendar, or the King James Bible.

Personal information

Passwords cannot be based on users’ or family members’ names, birthdays, social security numbers, pets names, nicknames, anniversaries, or other easily obtainable information.

These guidelines were created so that passwords cannot be easily guessed, or a password cracker software will not be able to get the password. It does not mean a password cracker software wont get the password, it only means it could take them way longer time to get the password, and possibly they were hoping that you used a password that is common. Most give up, after so long. Others only persue the passwords "if" they feel there is a major payload of information in the end. EVERYONE needs to implement these guidelines. If you run a business you should be aware and teach your employees these guidelines.

A good password, or a simple way to create a good password...

This is the best way I know to create a password that is not easily guessed.

Have you got a favorite spot or sport that only you and your loved ones know about or all have a interest in?

How about you loving the Grand Canyon?

If you and your wife or significant other love to go to the Grand Canyon then make a password based on this info.

(M)y (w)ife (a)nd (I) (l)ove (t)o (v)isit (t)he (G)rand (C)anyon (o)n (t)he (f)irst (o)f (J)une (e)very (y)ear.

Mw#aI$ltvtG&Cot@foJ$ey <<---- There is your password the word "first" can be changed to the number 1 for even added security. The "o's" can be changed to 0 zeros "I" can be changed also to the letter l (L) or a 1. (#1)

You could also use the first or last letter of your children's names and use either the date misconstrued into it like this.... I prefer the last letter in their names.

I have 4 children so see if you can figure this out. lol

Its important to note that the numbers in that password are not dates (I'll never tell) lol

After creating the password, I should point out it is very easy for me to remember but a thief or con artist will have a hard time figuring it out.

As always when it comes to security remember nothing is 100% secure. If anyone claims it is run very fast.
