Disk Cleanup:

One of the first things you will learn is sooner or later your hard drive will fill up. You will have files on it that you could care less about anymore because they lost that luster they had months ago, or you may need to clean up certain areas like Temp files, and the trash. To leave it on your computer would, or could cause problems later on. Your computer could start belching, and one day you could see a dreaded error message telling you that there is no room for that new game you want so badly to install. You may even be the type to install software just to run a test run, and maybe even create several files that at the time you needed, but now you don't. I am a firm believer in having a backup. So backup software that you like by putting this on cd, and remove software and files that you no longer need. This includes Temp files, and that trash can that you seem to let fill up to the brim. A clean computer runs better than a cluttered computer. While you are at it, make sure to scan disk and defrag at least once a month if you are a heavy computer user. Enough rambling ... on with the disk cleanup...

Disk cleanup is just as it sounds, it cleans up your hard drive, to get rid of files etc. You can clean up as much or as little as you want. But each category has it's own file type that it handles. This is a pretty straight forward procedure. But just so you know. Once it's cleaned, the content is gone unless you want to pay a high price for software to retrieve it.

First you want to go to "start"

Then "programs"

Then "accessories"

next is "system tools"

finally "Disk cleanup"

Accessories will not show on this picture, but the rest is showing.  Figure 1

The next window  Figure 2 Windows is calculating how much space you will be saving by using this tool.

The next window  Figure 3 shows you each area on your hard drive that has files etc that you can safely remove. This is where you choose yourself by putting a checkmark in the boxes for the items you want to remove. Some of these will be auto checkmarked. Notice on this Window will also be shown how much space these files are using on your drive. Other files you will have to checkmark yourself. You can uncheck also the ones that you don't want to mess with because they may not be taking up that much space in the first place. On the program files, I find it best to remove these during regular computer maintenance. If you are doing regular computer maintenance at this time. Remove software through the add/remove programs under the control panel instead. Under this section. You still get to see when the last time was that you used the software. Plus you can safely remove the software.

On  Figure 4 if you click on the more options tab this is the window you will see. This allows you even more options. It is also where you choose to remove programs you are no longer using. I don't mean to sound two faced with using this option. You can use this if you want too. I just never did use this because I prefer the the control panel route. The last option on this windows is Windows System Restore option. This option is NOT used if you are cleaning up your computer. If you are by any chance having problems with your computer. You use this option to roll back your computer to a earlier date.

Figure 5 is just a confirmation window. You confirm by clicking on the yes button.
On  Figure 6 It shows the progress of each area you check marked. You can cancel this tool if you need too during this time also.

That's It! You are done.
